How does Coconut Oil Work

Coconut oil has been used in Asia and the South Pacific for generations as a hair care product and in medicine. Many claim that oil of a coconut can clear the skin, reduce stress, help with maintaining luscious hair, bolster the immune system, maintain cholesterol levels, assist with weight loss, and slow the effects of aging.

The benefits of coconut oil are believed to arise from the presence of lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid, and their properties of being antimicrobial, antioxidant and antifungal compounds.

Composition of Coconut Oil

Coconut oil consists of more than ninety percent of saturated fatty acids, with most of them being medium chain triglycerides. Lauric Acid is the main contributor to the triglycerides, with more than forty percent of the share, followed by Capric Acid, Caprylic Acid, Myristic Acid and Palmitic. Your body converts lauric acid into monolaurin which is believed to help in dealing with viruses and bacteria causing diseases such as herpes, influenza,  and even HIV.

It helps in fighting harmful bacteria such as listeria monocytogenes and heliobacter pylori, and protozoa such as giardia lamblia. Because of the various beneficial properties of coconut oil, though its exact mechanism of action was unknown, it has been extensively used in the traditional Indian medicinal system, Ayurveda.

Coconut Oil and Hair Care

coconut oil is excellent at providing nutrition to hair. It provides a shiny complexion to hair. Regular topical application of coconut oil keeps the scalp free of dandruff, and coconut oil is an excellent moisturizer. It is a wonderful conditioner, and assists in the regrowth of damaged hair. It also provides essential proteins require for nourishing damaged hair. Coconut oil is a key ingredient in many conditioners, hair car oils and dandruff creams.

Applying Coconut Oil to Hair

Coconut oil is applied topically to the hair. Here a re a few suggestions of how to apply it:

  • Scoop a hand full and rub it on your scalp and hair. Move your hands as if you are applying a conditioner.
  • You can also liberally rub the oil into the hair, don a shower cap, and sleep with the coconut oil in your hair all night. Then wash it out the next morning. This method should condition and revitalize the most driest of hair. Using coconut oil is also safe. There are no nasty chemicals, unless you are allergic to coconuts.
  • Alternatively, you can massage your scalp with coconut oil. Leave it in for 2 hours. This is supposed to increase hair shine and aid rejuvenation.
  • After a shower, apply a tiny amount of coconut oil to your hair. Avoid the roots, just moisturize the ends. Keep it in the hair all day long as a moisturizer.
