I have an uneasy relationship with the Holiday Season. I’m not a Grinch or a Scrooge it’s just been hard for me to put aside the drama and other stresses of adult hood. I tend to look at the Holiday’s through the jaded eye of a tired adult.

As my family has grown and aged I have learned to step back and take comfort in the small things that keep me grounded. The things that wrap me in warmth and take the chill off those bitter adult feeling.

From now on our troubles will be out of sight

My biggest comfort is surrounding myself with light.

HIS light.

Holiday lights.

The light in my children’s eyes.

I take comfort in my small family.

I seclude myself in the comfort and closeness of a husband who truly understands and supports me.  Who will take me in his arms and remind me what’s important during the holidays. It’s not the perfect gift, the perfect decorations or doing all the events available to us.

I take comfort in the memories of the Christmas of my youth and how we have Incorporated it into our current holiday.

I take comfort in pulling out old ornaments, handmade by grandma’s past. Telling my kids stories of the family they won’t know, keeping their memories alive

If the fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough
And have yourself a merry little Christmas now

Mostly I take comfort in just being.

Being in the moment, in the kitchen, in this family. In going through the routine of holiday baking and crafting and creating the memories and traditions that will one day comfort my grown children.
